As the previous post on Passiontide Hymns was getting rather long, here is a second batch of less well known Passiontide Hymns.

One of the many manuscripts that are still available to us is the Salzinnes Antiphonal. Not only is this manuscript beautifully scanned but also has a menu tab that gives the text in easy to read modern fonts.

The Hymnum Dicamus Domino is an Ambrosian hymn, the text was later modified around the 17th c. to give the Hymnum canamus supplices. This Hymn is found in the Cantus Database and is used for Passion Sunday as either Matins or Vespers, the Invention of the Holy Cross (May 3rd) as Vespers or Lauds, and the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (September 14th) In the Ambrosian breviary it is used for Vespers or Lauds Vespers on Holy Thursday, Lauds and Vespers on Good Friday and Lauds on Holy Saturday.

The Crux Fidelis is part of the longer Pange Lingua (Crux Fidelis), Selected verses have been taken to form a compline hymn in the Salzinnes Antiphonal. More on the Pange Lingua can be found here Passiontide Hymns and Good Friday Hymns.

The Lauds Hymn in the Salzinnes Antiphonal uses verse 5 onwards of the Hymnum dicamus domino laudes above.

Kloster Einsiedeln Musikbibliothek Sequentiarium, XI, XII Century

The Rex Christe Factor Omnium is found in the Liturgical Year, Dom Prosper Gueranger. It is an Office Hymn found in the Ancient Roman French Missals. According to the Cantus index it was used for a variety of the Hours including Lauds.

Our Final hymn is the Salve Crux, Office Hymn for the Feast of the Holy Cross, suggested in the Antiphonal 1949 as suitable for use in Passiontide. This is used in the Dominican and Monastic Breviary. We will write more on this Hymn on the Feasts of the Holy Cross.
